Scalise Group
By Melissa Newsom
Sam Scalise, a prominent Grand Strand developer and visionary, landed on a stepping stone in the early 1980s after leaping from his home in West Virginia to his family’s vacation destination, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
That chapter in the West Virginia home-builder’s life began when he built a spec home in The Forest at Briarcliff Acres in North Myrtle Beach, and subsequently earned contracts to build custom homes for others on the Grand Strand. Before long, he decided to move his family and small business to Myrtle Beach, where Scalise Builders constructed single-family homes in renowned neighborhoods such as Wachesaw Plantation and Pine Lakes.
Scalise focused on resort residential construction after Hurricane Hugo ravaged the Carolina coast in 1989. His significant efforts helped revitalize the Surfside Beach and Garden City communities, quickly returning them to thriving vacation retreats.
Backed by that success, Scalise Builders expanded to include Scalise Development and, in 1994, Scalise Realty.
Today, Scalise is president and chief executive officer of Scalise Group, the parent company of Scalise Builders of the Carolinas, Scalise Development of the Rockies, Scalise Development–run by son Michael–and Scalise Realty–run by son Matt. His wife, Cindy, is the Scalise Group senior design specialist.
Scalise’s professional portfolio includes luxury homes, ocean-front property rentals and the development of a community in the mountains of Colorado. Whether he is building for the vacation rental market or developing residential properties, excellence is the key to his success.
“We pride ourselves on our quality of construction and using the best materials available on the market today,” says Kevin Talbert, senior vice president of Scalise Group. “Attention to detail is the critical component. We want a Scalise-built home to be identified by its design characteristics, fit and finish more so than by a sign in the yard.”
Sam Scalise’s most remarkable project is North Beach Plantation, which is expected to produce an economic impact in the $1-billion range. Currently under construction, 60 acres of Georgian architecture will lavishly envelope condominiums, manor homes, shopping, dining and a world-class spa. Destined to be an East Coast landmark, North Beach Plantation might also be a stepping stone from which Scalise’s sons will grow the family business even further.
“We at Scalise Realty are excited to be an integral part of the North Beach Plantation success while maintaining our position as the market leader on the South Strand,” said Matt Scalise, broker-in-charge. “A lot of people say we were just at the right place at the right time, but, in order to be successful, you have to be at the right place at the right time with the right product and the right people.”
